Wall Hangings for Solemn Liturgical Occasions: Santa Maria della Salute, Venice

We have talked about the beautiful tradition of wall hangings for solemn liturgical occasions, once called for in the Cæremoniale Episcoporum, and still used in some places, especially Malta (cf. posts here and here). I noticed with gladness that when our Holy Father visited the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute in Venice this Sunday (a church which was featured on the NLM before and also here), splendid red and gold wall and column hangings were used.




The Pope was transported to the basilica from St. Mark's in a magnificent old gondola:
