It was brought to the NLM's attention that Cardinal Cañizares Llovera recently gave an interview, published yesterday, on the German language Catholic news site, Kath.net. The interview touched upon a wide number of liturgical subjects.
In the interview, Cardinal Cañizares, while noting a continuing mixed climate of acceptance and hostility in relation to the motu proprio, Summorum Pontificum, speaks of a growing understanding of the motu proprio, as well as "the understanding of the liturgy in the tradition of the Church" and notes that "the same is true of the hermeneutic of continuity." The Cardinal continues, "all of this will benefit not only the acceptance and implementation of the motu proprio, but will also enrich the liturgical renewal and move it forward..."
The theme of the hermeneutic of continuity and the avoidance of disunity in relation to the two forms of the Roman liturgy are emphasized by Cardinal Cañizares, as is the point of the educational relevance for both forms of the Second Vatican Council's Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium.
Speaking of young Catholics, the Cardinal comments that "young people must be educated in the spirit of the liturgy" and introduced to the spirit of worship and mystery, noting that liturgical education is lacking amongst the young. He further comments that "young people and children should participate in liturgies celebrated with great dignity, which are permeated by the mystery of God..."
He also notes that "today we need a new liturgical movement, as there was in the 19th and 20th centuries."
If time permits, the NLM will endeavour to produce a full translation of the interview.
