Te Deum in Vienna

Yesterday, on the fourth anniversary of the election of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to the Apostolic See, a solemn Te Deum was sung in Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral. The main celebrant was the new Apostolic Nuncio to Austria, who was assisted by Cardinal von Schönborn of Vienna and Bishop Kapellari of Graz.

One of the more deplorable developments after the liturgical reforms has been the almost exclusive reduction of the liturgical life to Mass itself - contrary to the intenttions of the original Liturgical Movement -, and the very longstanding and not long ago ubiquitous practice of giving public thanks to Almighty God on certain occasions by singing a solemn Te Deum is one which has seen a particularly marked decline, in some regions verging on the complete disappearance. It is hearting therefore to see that this is not the case everywhere. A general recovery of this practice would certainly be among the aims of the New Liturgical Movement wished for by the Holy Father.
