


This is the High Altar of the Basilica. Note that no people's altar has been installed there; hence, Mass is always celebrated versus Deum (click on pictures to enlarge):


To the right of the altar, you see a rather splendid seat for the priest. This is actually a papal throne offered to St. Pius X, the former Patriarch of Venice, by the dioceses of the province of Venice on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood:
