Recently, the subject of the manner of incensation of a freestanding altar has come up several times. Therefore I thought it might be helpful to post this graphic instruction which is contained in the 1962 Missale Romanum. Its heading is "Order of incensation of an altar which can easily be walked around". The directions beneath mean "Having first incensed the Cross (and the relics or images), 22 swings are made, of which nos. 1 to 3 and 14 to 16 above the mensa of the altar, nos. 4 to 13 and 17 to 22 however below and from the side."
