A little more than a month ago, I gave a talk on sacred music in the Diocese of Scranton, PA. As part of my presentation, I offered to the attendees a list of materials that are helpful in aiding one in the understanding of sacred music. I now offer it here for your benefit. I emphasize that this is not an exhaustive list, but rather a place where one might start.
You'll notice immediately that this list includes books about the liturgy in general. This is probably obvious to most of you, but for those who might not understand why, the church musician needs to know as much about the liturgy as possible since the music must harmonize with it.
Choir directors might wish to share all or part of this list with their singers.
