I was having a discussion with a colleague the other day and the question came up: how many Catholics in the pews today know the words or music, or both, to "Veni Creator?" I estimated 10%. Or maybe it's 20%. Surely not as many as half. The old Catholic Encyclopedia describes it as the "most famous" of all hymns. But how many Catholics will hear it this coming Pentecost Sunday? Lacking a scientific survey, we can only guess. I would say, again, 10%. What is your guess? (Note I replaced the cleaner, shortened version with this longer one from the Liber Usualis)
