This weekend, Philadelphia hosts one of the foremost members of the up and coming generation of organists as Paul Jacobs plays the splendid Dobson pipe organ in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center.
Jacobs earned degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music as well as Yale University. He is now chair of the organ department at Juilliard in New York City. He is well known for his virtuosic playing, his Messiaen marathons, and his tireless efforts to increase popular appreciation for the pipe organ and its music, among other things.
The program for Saturday's 3pm recital is as follows:
Bach: Prelude and Fugue in A minor, BWV 543
Franck: Prelude, Fugue et Variation, Op. 18
Reger: Fantasia and Fugue on BACH, Op. 46
Messiaen: L'Ascension
Reubke: Sonata on the 94th Psalm
This list of composers, of course, represents a number of the most important contributors to the sacred music repertoire of the organ. On Saturday, this music can be heard in ideal circumstances--on one of the finest instruments available, played by one of the greatest of this generation. This event is not to be missed.
