Anyone who believes that the current controversy over Gregorian chant is merely a matter of taste needs to read this article: "Gregorian Chant as a Paradigm of Sacred Music" by William Mahrt. I can't imagine that anyone could read it carefully and not come away with a sense of awe concerning the intimate relationship between chant and liturgy--indeed, between music and liturgy. If his argument were well understood and absorbed, most of the current controversy would be settled. (The article is from the Spring 2006 issue of Sacred Music.)
