The editor of Crisis Magazine asked us to write this after he got hold of a Graduale Romanum and said: I have no idea what all this means, and I can read music! He said he wanted a short explanation for the person on the street.
I must say, it was a great challenge, and we worked forever on it. We tried to be accurate without being boring, chatty without giving up precision, descriptive without entering into sticky areas of interpretation.
I really hope we succeeded, but if we didn't I'm sure we'll hear about it (as we should!). Here is "The Idiot's Guide to Square Notes" (Crisis, May 2006).
