This recording is from the closing Mass of the Sacred Music Colloquium, the Alleluia for the 13th Sunday of the Year, sung by the intermediate women's choir directed by Arlene Oost-Zinner with the verse sung by Mary Ann Carr. The liturgical function of the Alleuia centers on the expression of joy toward the reading of the Gospel, and this setting embodies that perfectly. Mary Ann in particular here revealed new things in her interpretation of the verse -- with free rhythm and attention to ornaments that can only be sung by a soloist, ornaments she worked on in the days prior under coaching by William Mahrt. It was one of the more striking musical moments of the week.
