Mid-western Chant Workshop, July 10-12, 2008 (Thursday-Saturday),
Benedictine College, Atchison, KS (one hour north of Kansas City, one hour north-east of Topeka, 45 minutes from Kansas City International Airport)
Andrew Mills, Chant Master and author of Psallite Sapienter.
This is a chant practicum geared toward the newcomer to Gregorian Chant, although the more advanced student will also find the workshop useful. Participants will learn the proper and ordinary chants for the Requiem Mass as well as the Orbis Factor Mass and the Propers for the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Participants will also work on two polyphonic pieces, William Byrd’s Ave Verum Corpus and Palestrina’s Sicut Cervus.
The conference also includes a talk on Gregorian Chant and its relevance in the Church today and in ordinary parish life as well as a panel discussion at the end of the conference when participants will be able to ask all relevant questions. Participants will be house in Ferrell Hall, the original monastery for St. Benedict’s Abbey, which was recently renovated into a modern, apartment style dormitory for the college.
Meals will be provided from Thursday evening through Saturday evening. Participants will receive a packet of all music upon arrival as well as a copy of the Liber Cantualis, a helpful little chant book for all church musicians. One of the greatest aspects of the workshop will be the beautiful celebration of the Roman Liturgy in the Ordinary Form in St. Benedict’s Church, the original abbey church built in 1866.
